- Senator Barack Obama kicked off his general election campaign in Wisconsin with a stop in Kaukauna.
During his town hall meeting today, Obama told the crowd about his plan to help ease the troubled economy.
He says that starts with tax credits for America's middle class.
Obama hit his point home using an Appleton family.
Ryan and Jenny Micke joined the Illinois Senator on the stage today.
Obama says there are millions of families in the country like the Micke's.
The couple brings in just over $37,000 a year in combined income.
He says his tax credits would help couple's like this around the country.
"If you're a family that's making $250,000 a year or less you will see no increase in your taxes. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your personal gains tax, not any of your taxes," he says.
Obama says his plan also includes simplifying our tax system.
He says he'll take the complexity out of filing your taxes.
Saving you money and time.
Obama adds that he will also eliminate income taxes for seniors who make less that 50-thousand dollars a year.
The Senator also spoke about getting health care to all Americans.
Obama says the cost of health care has gone up 78 percent since President Bush took office.
He says if you are an uninsured American, under his plan you would be able to buy into a healthcare pool, much like the pool the U.S. Congress uses.
"If you're self employed, if you're working for a small employer, then you can buy into a health care pool, that we'll set up, similar to the health care pool in Congress. You'll be able to get the same health insurance I get. If you can't afford it then we'll provide you with the tax credits for you to be able to afford it," Obama says.
Obama critized the health care plan proposed by Senator John McCain.
He says McCain's proposal would eliminate the tax break that companies get for offering health care to employees.
He adds in turn that would take away the incentive for businesses to offer health insurance and leave more people searching for insurance on their own.
Obama says under his plan, all Americans could afford health coverage.
