Rustic Apple Cranberry Pie

Pie Crust
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into cubes
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 Tablespoon white vinegar
5 Tablespoons ice water

Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl, add in the cold butter cubes and shortening and using a pastry cutter, cut in the fat until the mixture resembles coarse corn meal. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg, vinegar and ice water. Add into the crumb mixture til just combined. Dump out onto a floured surface and knead a few times into a solid dough ball. Chill 30 minutes or more before using. This will make 4 8" pie crusts or 3 9-10" crusts.
I also make this crust in a food processor with great success. Pulse the flour and salt. Add in the shortening and butter cubes and pulse till mixture resembles coarse meal. Add in the wet ingredients and pulse until a dough ball forms. If needed add 1 tablespoon of water extra to achieve the proper texture.

Rustic Apple Cranberry Pie

5 cups, peeled apple slices
1 cup cranberries
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Milk or half and half for brushing the crust if desired, and sugar for sprinkling on the crust
Preheat oven to 425*F
