- Hunters across the state of Wisconsin will get the chance to go after bears this week.

Hunters in Wisconsin will start their bear hunting season on Wednesday. The seasons runs until early October.

Many hunters use bait and hounds to help track down the game.

"A hound is a scent animal and a trailing dog," Steve White said, the owner of White's Forest and Fish. "So they are going to follow the scent of that animal wherever it may be."

White trains hounds for bear hunting. He also takes people out to help with their hunting. He knows how to pursue bears.

"Get him (the bear) up and moving and walking running," White said. "They (the hounds) are going to pursue him until hopefully he goes into a tree or they just get too tired they can't go anywhere."

The type of hound White trains is Plotts. It's a type of hound that is bred specifically to hunt down black bears.

"The breed became renowned in its skills for hunting big game animals and especially the American black bear," said White. "Then over the years that's where the focus remained."

White is passionate about developing the hounds into excellent hunters. He enjoys seeing them progress.

"Coaching any other athlete, which technically they are and watching them get better every time out and becoming the best that they can be is really one of the most rewarding things," White said.
