Northern Wisconsin cross country teams start season in MinocquaSubmitted: 08/26/2014

MINOCQUA - Seven high school cross country teams started their season in Minocqua Tuesday night at the eighth annual Ted Voigt Invitational.

Lakeland Union High School, the defending Great Northern Conference champs, hosted the first match of the season.

The event is named after a former coach at Lakeland Union High School.

"It's our first meet of the year. It's everybody's first meet of the year. So we thought it might be nice to have a meet named after a longtime coach who had a successful program here," said of Lakeland head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.

Seven teams gathered at the Minocqua Winter Park for the meet. Coaches say the course presents runners with challenging terrain.

High schoolers from Lakeland, Mosinee, Merrill, Mercer, Northland Pines, Phelps, Rhinelander, and Wisconsin Rapids all competed in the invitational.

"It's a chance to kind of shake off the cobwebs and see where you're at. What's nice about these early races is that varsity and JV kids run together, so you really get a chance to see where you fit on your team," said Fitzpatrick.

Lakeland's Senior Andrew Schilling finished the course with the fastest time of 17:51. Lakeland had the five fastest boys runners in the invitational.

Meanwhile, Lakeland sophomore Lauren Schilling finished the course with the fastest girls time of 21:31.3. Lakeland had three of the four fast girls at Tuesday's event.
