- The fishing opener probably couldn't have come on a better weekend this year.
The sun and warm temperatures are one of the reasons businesses say this past weekend's opener was a success.
Eagle Sports Center in Eagle River had a 250 percent increase in business compared to last year.
Employees say it had its best opening fishing weekend in more than a decade.
"A really big deal, it means a lot to us," Eagle Sports Center's George Langley said. "It's kind of hopefully a platform for the rest of the summer us and if that's the platform summer, we're going to have a great summer up here."
Eagle Sports Center says one of its most popular items over the weekend was bait.
Customers were even coming back for more in the afternoon.
"Fishing was great, we had something here that we haven't had for years and that's that people bought bait in the morning were coming back in the afternoon to get more bait, which means they were using them up so that's a big plus, that portends that the fishing is going to be good this summer also," said Langley.
