- North Central Wisconsin reached nearly 80 degrees this week, but a group of hockey players enjoyed a cool, 32 degree day on the ice.
The Wausau Riverwolves have started camp ahead of its inaugural season.
Merrill native, Austin Burgener knew he wanted to play for the new tier 3 junior hockey team coming to Wausau this year.
"Right when Tim asked me to come out and play, that's what I'd been waiting for. That's what I wanted so I was really excited about it," said Burgener.
And now, it's finally here.
"The main thing right now is team chemistry," said Burgener.
That team chemistry has to grow fast.
"Just to build that comradery and those friendships, and be together, that'll be very big for us," said Head Coach, Tim Brownell.
"I'm not a big yeller, I'm not a big 'in your face' kind of guy," said Brownell.
He's come from Gillette, Wyoming to coach this NA3HL team.
"Numbers are a little low for what we want," said Brownell.
Low numbers or not, they're ready for the home opener on Friday, October 13th.
"We're a north and south team. Up the wall, down the wall, fast paced, high intensity, physical when it has to be physical," said Brownell.
One of Brownell's main philosophies is establishing individual goals to get the players up to the collegiate or higher level.
"That's everyone's main goal, to keep playing and go as far as they can," said Burgener.
Brownell makes the players write out a list of where they want to go next and how they're going to get there, so he can help them.
"We're doing that on a daily basis just to make sure these guys are getting noticed and have that opportunity to advance to the next level," said Brownell.
That next level could be anywhere, but it'll all start in Wausau.
All of the Riverwolves games will be played at Marathon Park in Wausau.
