- People in northcentral and northwest Wisconsin drive on the worst local roads in the state.
But money for road projects seems to be headed to southern Wisconsin more and more.
Three nonprofit groups in the state finished a study with those findings.
They say the trend breaks a deal in the state.
The groups say gas taxes and registration fees should go to support local roads.
"If you're in Rhinelander, and you're filling up your tank full of gas, you ought to get a good portion of that money back in Rhinelander to fix the roads there," said Steve Hiniker, the Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, one of the groups on the study. "That's what we're trying to convince legislators to do."
The study shows how Gov. Scott Walker proposes to use money for transportation in his state budget.
Twice as much would go to projects in southeastern Wisconsin and on major highways compared to local roads.
"That money is being shipped primarily to southeast Wisconsin for freeway expansion," Hiniker said. "What's happening is, you're not getting your fair share of dollars back. You're supposed to get up to 85 percent of your costs. You're getting more like 15 or 20 percent of your costs reimbursed."
Hiniker would like to see that change.
"Local roads are in very poor shape," he said. "We want to bring it to the attention of policymakers as they debate the budget, so that we allocate more money for communities across the state, rather than freeway expansion in southeast Wisconsin."
More than 40 percent of local roads in northcentral and northwest Wisconsin are in poor condition.
