RHINELANDER - It's been a while since Independence Day fell on a Saturday, but that coincidence of the calendar made for a busy weekend for local firework stands.

"The last few years, we had the weekends. The Fourth was in the middle of the week so we basically had two weekends for everyone to come in," said Jim Hext, owner of By Request Fireworks. "Where this year it was basically on the weekend. So they all came in at one time on the Fourth, the third and fourth. It was real busy the last couple of days."

This year marked the seventh summer season since Hext started selling fireworks, and it was a very successful one.

"We did excellent this year again," said Hext. "We met our goals and kind of exceeded it a little bit."

Hext will keep the stand open until July 7. The stand is located just south of the intersection of HWY K and 47. Customers can also purchase fireworks year round online at the link below.

PARK FALLS - Kelly Meredith's paint-splattered uniform and face tell us what she does.  But the Butternut muralist prefers to think of her job as a historian.

"Those stories need to go out to the rest of us," Meredith said.

Brush stroke by brush stroke, Meredith went to work this spring, painting the uniforms and faces of Northwoods World War II veterans and bringing their stories back to life.

"They weren't gods and heroes," Meredith said. "They're ordinary people who overcame their fear and the courage and dignity to basically save the world."
