- A pair of turkeys likely destined for someone's Thanksgiving dinner table will instead live out long and happy lives thanks to their daring escape.
The turkeys were in a truck headed down Highway 29 in Wausau Sunday morning. Their crate fell off the back of the truck and onto the highway. Another driver called police, but somehow the birds weren't hit by cars.
Officers needed some help to wrangle the birds into custody. Workers from Wild Instincts Rehab captured both turkeys and brought them to Antigo.
"You know, the funny thing is when we tell our own children if they're in danger to run," Raptor Education Group Executive Director Marge Gibson said. "The first thing you do is run, and then you find a police officer. That's exactly what they did."
Gibson treated both birds for some internal injuries and the female for a fractured foot. But Gibson expects the turkeys to fully recover and live up to 12 years.
"When they make a break for it themselves and they are off the truck and break out, that kind of story has presidential pardon all over it," Gibson said. "I'm the president of the organization, so I pardon them."
Gibson says her family will welcome the turkeys (as guests) for Thanksgiving, then she will try to find them a "forever home".
