- Community members love to see their own grow up and succeed.
In that spirit, Eagle River has thrown its support behind one young woman as she begins her NASCAR career this weekend.
Twenty-two-year old Paige Decker will make her debut in the Camping World Truck Series at Martinsville, Virginia. But her breakthrough wouldn't have been possible without the help of Eagle River community.
"I've been trying to find donations and sponsorship to go to this race," Decker said. "If it wasn't for all of the businesses in Eagle River and the large sum of money we raised from that, we wouldn't have gone through with this process."
Decker went door to door to businesses in Eagle River. She talked to the owners in hopes of raising money and sponsorships.
"Her drive to succeed is very high," said Scott Elliott, owner of Scott's Auto Body. "She came over and talked to me and showed me her brochure of recent history, just very excited about it. Because of that I wanted to be part of the community that was going to support her."
Scott Anderson, who is on the board of directors for the World Snowmobile Headquarters, has known Decker since she was starting on snowmobiles. He was also a team member while she was racing Mid-American stock cars and Super Lates. He says he was proud to support her again this time around.
"This will be very cool," Anderson said. "I mean, this is her dream. The weekends we spent at the race track and all the time that went into it. It's really cool to see her progress into the next level."
Decker says she's excited to represent the people who helped her grow up.
"I think they all remember me when I was little, when I could barely walk," Decker said with a laugh. "So I think it's cool for them to see how far and how much this dream is really something that I want to happen and how dedicated I am."
The community will get the chance to see that dedication at work Saturday.
"Going to watch practice, then get a little get-together at the house tomorrow," Anderson said. "It should be a pretty good time."
The race will air at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Fox Sports 1.
