Packer Hall of Famer Makes a Stop in the NorthwoodsSubmitted: 08/30/2014

WOODRUFF - The Gilbert Brown Foundation made a stop in Woodruff on Sunday.

Gilbert Brown, also known as the Grave Digger, uses his Hall of Fame Packer career to give back to the Wisconsin community.

The Foundation does over 144 charities across the state and helps children by providing life skills, promoting diversity, and raising funds for kids with cancer.

"It just comes back to the point of giving back," Brown said. "It's just if you got the opportunity to help someone change somebody's life or even a smile on someone's face that's one of the most rewarding things you can do."

Brown makes sure to go all over the state of Wisconsin because he wants to give back to as many Wisconsinites as possible. He also says Packer fans are unique.

"Football around here is different than any other state," Brown said. "These people here bleed green and yellow. It's truly a thing to see. Some of the other fans are fair weather fans, depending on what quarterback came in, what player came in, and then they will want to cheer for their team."

Browns effect on the youth can be seen.

"He's done anti-bullying speeches at multiple different schools and that's been a huge impact," said Carrie Geary, an intern for the Gilbert Brown Foundation. "Kids won't really talk about their bullying but when Gilbert gets up there says 'hey I've been through it's not good you need to talk to someone,' they standup and ask questions like 'who do I talk to, this happened to me, what do I do', and it's amazing the outcome."

Badgers football less than three weeks awaySubmitted: 08/13/2014

MADISON - Star tailback Melvin Gordon is still on the run at Wisconsin, but new leaders must emerge on defense in 2014.

Coach Gary Andersen's team lost eight defensive starters from a squad that finished 9-4 last year. The most notable loss was star linebacker Chris Borland, who is now with the San Francisco 49ers.

But what helps the returnees is that Andersen rotated a lot of younger players in and out of the lineup last year, so many of this year's replacements have at least some experience. The goal this year is to be faster and more athletic, in part to help keep up with trendy spread offenses.

The Badgers are also still sorting through a quarterback competition. Andersen needs to decide between incumbent Joel Stave and dual-threat challenger Tanner McEvoy by the Aug. 30 opener against LSU.

MILWAUKEE - Rookie Kyle Hendricks pitched 7 1/3 innings of six-hit ball in his third consecutive win, and the Chicago Cubs cooled off Wily Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Hendricks (4-1) struck out five and walked one in his third consecutive win, continuing an impressive opening run for his major league career. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he got a no-decision in his debut at Cincinnati on July 10.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th homer for Chicago, which had lost three of four. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run after going 1 for 14 through the first four games of the Cubs' seven-game homestand.

Trying for a major league-high 15th win, Peralta (14-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
