Learning to musky fishSubmitted: 09/22/2014

SHERMAN - Many people come to the Northwoods to musky fish.

But, for those who have never even held a rod, there are guides to help.

Don Ladubec, loves to fish and specializes in guiding first timers.

"When I get on the water I turn into an optimist. I settle down, I'm not as high strung, it smooths me out," said First Timer's Musky Guide Service Guide Don Ladubec.

Fishing is not all about catching a fish.

"You're here to have fun. It's supposed to have fun. It shouldn't be high stress. Yeah you want to catch a fish and stuff but some days you just don't catch a fish," said Ladubec.

The hunt for a trophy fish keeps many people on the lake.

"I like the challenge. I like going out every day and going I might catch my first 50 inch fish. I don't have a 50 inch fish in Wisconsin," said Ladubec. "It's rewarding and it's a passion."

Don Ladubec runs a guide service to assist people who have never fished before.

"I've taken a lot of kids fishing and getting them their first fish and seeing them smile and seeing how overjoyed they actually get. They get more excited than me and I get pretty excited," said Ladubec.

One of his major suggestions is to perfect your figure eight pattern.

"Make sure you do a good figure eight. When that fish comes up, if your blades stop spinning, that fish is gonna be gone," said Ladubec.

Ladubec likes to guide because he loves helping people catch their first fish.
"It is so rewarding to see somebody catch their first fish. And, know you did it. You helped them," said Ladubec.

The state size limit to legally keep a musky is 40 inches but it can differ lake to lake.

"I would like complete catch and release," said Ladubec. "That way someone else's 9 year old grandson can catch one like mine did."

People like Ladubec find passion in helping newcomers learn to fish.

"When I catch a fish, when my clients catch a fish, do I shake? Is it an adrenaline rush? Absolutely. When I stop getting that feeling I will find another hobby," said Ladubec.
