MERCER - Nature provides creative outlets for many people across the Northwoods.

Mary Burns uses a unique style of weaving while integrating the images of the North Country.

"I have a passion about birds, I have a passion about weaving too, it's like I'm never going to retire," Burns said. "I love what I do; I love all of the aspects of it."

Mary Burns love for weaving started when she was in high school. Now years later she has sold pieces to different parts of the country. Mary says living in the Northwoods helps her creativity.
"It's a really inspirational area to live in; I draw a lot of my weaving ideas from being out in the woods or on the water paddling," Burns said. "So if you look around at some of my pieces you'll see that influence."

Burns has strong influence over her work with her Jacquard loom.

"Jacquard is a newer loom and it's a new technology that's just been available to hand weavers in the past decade," said Burns.

Burns can control every one of the 1320 threads individually. She says she is one of approximately 30 Jacquard weavers in North America who has their own machine. She uses it for her fine detailed pieces.

Burns is married to a naturalist, John Bates. Allowing her to be even more connected to the natural world and finding new ideas.

"It's great we connect on a lot of different aspects of our lives and being out together in nature is wonderful," said Burns.

You can see Burns's work this summer and fall in the Northwoods Art Tour.

"It's great because people come in and we demonstrate how we make our art," said Burns.
