Bear Hunting Season Soon to Start in NorthwoodsSubmitted: 09/01/2014
EAGLE RIVER - The bear hunting season kicks off on Wednesday in the state of Wisconsin.

Hunters are allowed to use hounds in every zone besides C which stretches north to south in the center part of the state.

It helps to have more than just a gun to hunt bears in the Northwoods.

"You got to check the bait, put the dog down and the dog's got to find the bear," said Steve White, the owner of White's Woods and Fishing. "Then you got to get the bear."

White knows the best way to give hunters a chance. He helps other hunters get the big game.

"Then you got to stop the bear you got to go to the dogs," White said. "Bears just don't always agree with what we want."

But they do agree on one thing, the bait

"On a daily basis we are running baits and find new bait sites, feeding them bears and keeping them fat and happy for our hunters," said White.

It is important to keep your baits around multiple food sources such as choke cherries.

"In the fall I think that is one of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to bear haunting," White said. "Not monitoring and being aware of the food sources that are out there."

That's because bears start looking for more than bait before the cold season.
"They start switching over as they prepare for winter and putting weight on," White said. "Our baits are just not enough to hold them there."

Hunters this week hope their preparation leads to a good start to the bear season.

Badgers football less than three weeks awaySubmitted: 08/13/2014

MADISON - Star tailback Melvin Gordon is still on the run at Wisconsin, but new leaders must emerge on defense in 2014.

Coach Gary Andersen's team lost eight defensive starters from a squad that finished 9-4 last year. The most notable loss was star linebacker Chris Borland, who is now with the San Francisco 49ers.

But what helps the returnees is that Andersen rotated a lot of younger players in and out of the lineup last year, so many of this year's replacements have at least some experience. The goal this year is to be faster and more athletic, in part to help keep up with trendy spread offenses.

The Badgers are also still sorting through a quarterback competition. Andersen needs to decide between incumbent Joel Stave and dual-threat challenger Tanner McEvoy by the Aug. 30 opener against LSU.

Trying for a major league-high 15th win, Peralta (14-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
