The Green Bay Defense Has a Goal Submitted: 10/19/2014
GREEN BAY - Green Bay looked unstoppable in the first quarter of Sunday's game against Carolina.

They put up 21 points quickly and the defense did its job. When both sides of the ball are clicking, the Packers soar.

"The defense is playing I would say kind of more like the 2010 season," said Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. "They are really shutting teams down, we're starting fast. We had 21 first quarter points. We are making them pretty one dimensional which we wanted to do especially the way Cam ran the ball last week."

When the offense is on a roll like it was in the first quarter the defense knows its mission is to get number 12 back on the field.

"Anytime the offense is rolling like that as a defense you want to feed them," said Packers cornerback, Tramon Williams. "You want to get off the field on third downs. Get the ball back to them as quick as possible and obviously they showed what they can do today and that's the way we need to play pretty much every week."

"We want to get them the ball back when they have it going and they had it going pretty good early in the game," said Packers linebacker, Julius Peppers. "It was good timing for us to play good. Get a couple of 3 and outs and get Aaron the ball back."

The Packers look to continue the good play into New Orleans next Sunday night.

Merrill defeats Lakeland 35-6Submitted: 10/17/2014

MERRILL - The Blue Jays hosted the Lakeland T-Birds.

Lakeland looked to clinch a playoff berth with a win tonight.

But it was a tough going away from home for the T-Birds.

They fell down 21-0 at halftime.

Then Merrill got the second half kickoff.

And they marched right down the field.

QB Chaz Mootz pitches to Mason Reinhardt who carried three times on the drive for a pair of first downs.

Then they took to the air.

Mootz hits Reinhardt again who picks up another 20 yards.

And they punch it in a few plays later.

Mootz finds Lucas Lee for a short TD pass.

And that squanders Lakeland's playoff hopes.

Merrill wins this one 35-6.

Rhinelander falls to Mosinee 49-14Submitted: 10/17/2014

MOSINEE - Mosinee played host to Rhinelander.

The Hodags traveled down on a windy night looking for one more win for their seniors.

Rhinelander's defense had a couple of good plays to open the game.

The very first play the Indians try the swing pass to Ben Fochs.

But he's taken down instantly by Kody Blacyki.

A few plays later.

QB Landon Stepan looks over the middle.

But Ryan Frahm does his JJ Watt impression and bats the ball down at the line.

Hodags hold the Indians until 4th and 3.

Mosinee will go for the first down.

The handoff goes to Chris Tomski up the middle.

And he take it all the way in almost untouched.

And that would break the game wide open for Mosinee.

They had only one drive that didn't end in a touchdown.

And they win this one 49-14.

Rodgers on roll for Packers, but seeks improvementSubmitted: 10/16/2014

GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson couldn't resist taking a good-natured dig at his prolific quarterback.

Yeah, he's seen better from Aaron Rodgers, who has 15 touchdowns and just one interception going into this weekend's game against Carolina.

The one pick came in the season opener. Since then, near-perfection.

"The year we went 15-1, I don't know, our offense was pretty ridiculous right there," Nelson said about the 2011 season. "So I don't know, but I think I've seen better." Nelson hesitated for a second and smiled, "I'll just give it to him that way."

Green Bay is on a three-game winning streak, tied atop the NFC North at 4-2 with Detroit. In that span, Rodgers is 58 of 87 for 722 yards passing, with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Marquette must go small in Wojo's 1st yearSubmitted: 10/10/2014

- Steve Wojciechowski is going to have to lean on his guards in his first year as Marquette's head coach.

The Golden Eagles have only one player taller than 6-foot-7, and 6-11 center Luke Fischer isn't eligible to play until mid-December because he's a transfer. Still, Wojciechowski is excited as he begins his first training camp at Marquette.

Wojciechowski replaced Buzz Williams, who left in the spring to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech.

Senior point guard Derrick Wilson is back. Marquette picked up experience in BYU transfer Matt Carlino, who can play immediately. Deonte Burton, the 6-4 swingman, might provide the most athletic scoring punch among returnees.

Marquette also picked up good news for 2015 when highly touted in-state prospect Henry Ellenson gave a verbal commitment to the school.
