- A Rhinelander golfer will play college golf at Clarke University in Iowa.
Senior Alex Gaber signed his letter of intent Wednesday.
Friends and family came to Rhinelander High School to congratulate him.
Gaber says he had a couple schools on his wish list, but he says choosing Clarke University was an easy decision.
"The golf opportunity is fantastic," says Gaber. "There's, I think, five or six golf courses within 20 minutes. The campus, it's small. It's a small school. The student-to-teacher ratio was 11:1, so you know you're going to get a lot of teacher attention. It was a great atmosphere."
Gaber works closely with the staff at Northwood Golf Course in Rhinelander to get better.
He says their insight has been invaluable.
"I have worked with those guys since I was eight years old, so they've been there all the time," he says. "I'll be hitting balls on the range, and they'll just walk up and call me out. They'll see something wrong, and just have me fix it right there."
Gaber's family was excited when he finally made his decision.
"They were very happy," he says. "They'd been with me through several college visits, and they'd been on the road, travelling with me to visit them all, so they were happy when I finally committed."
Gaber gives his coaches all the credit for helping him get better.
"They've been very supportive. Bringing us to all the meets and working with us constantly. Putting up with us throughout all the seasons. And then the coach at Clarke, he's a great guy. He's a lot of fun, and he'll definitely be a great coach for the future."
Gaber still has his senior golf season left to play at Rhinelander High School.
