Deputies capture escaped Marathon County inmateSubmitted: 09/03/2015
WAUSAU - A Marathon County inmate who ran away finds himself back in jail.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Matthew Hornung at the Wausau American Legion Golf Course Thursday morning.  Someone saw the 31-year-old man hiding in the woods near the golf course and called police.  

Hornung disappeared Wednesday.

He was cleared to go to an off-site meeting, but cut off his GPS tracker and vanished.

He is in custody on an Alernative to Revocation for his probation.

Court records show Hornung was convicted of midemeanor battery in 2012.

ARBOR VITAE - Fire destroyed a home in Arbor Vitae early Thursday morning but everyone inside got out safely.

A 911 call came into the Vilas County Sheriff's Department at 4:00 a.m., reporting a fire at 2075 Soik Road.

People in the home woke up to the smell of smoke.

They told police they found flames coming from one of the walls.

After trying to put out the fire, they got out of the home.

No one was hurt, but the home was a total loss.

PHILLIPS - Dozens of manufacturing workers in Phillips could face hard times in the next few months. The Georgia-Pacific plant in town will close on October 27, and 53 employees will be laid off.

Georgia-Pacific told us the workers are great, but a poor market for specialty wood board products is forcing the closure.

The plant closure could be a challenge for those laid-off workers, but it could also be an opportunity for a new career.

ANTIGO - Growers in Langlade County might see a familiar face the next time they need help with crops. UW-Extension Langlade County recently hired an interim agriculture agent last month. While he may be new to some, it's a job he's done before.

"I served in this position in Langlade County during the 1990s for about seven years," explained UW-Extention Agriculture Agent Stephen Zimmerman. "I was actually working as a grain and vegetable crops agent in this county, Marathon, and Lincoln. Previous to that, I completed my PhD in agronomy. "

FOX LAKE, IL - Even with 100 investigators on the ground for a second day, authorities in northern Illinois acknowledge they have no indication that three suspects wanted in the gun-slaying of an officer are still in the area.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko says the officer provided no concrete description of the men he was pursuing on foot before he was shot, except to tell dispatchers that two of them were white and one was black.

MILWAUKEE - A survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago says the value of Wisconsin farmland in its district fell about 2 percent from April through June.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1PKWJwl ) reports the survey also showed the value of "good" farmland dropped 2 percent for the second quarter of 2015 from a year earlier. That's the first such decline in nine quarters.
