 LOCAL NEWS

CRANDON - A Crandon police officer shot and killed a man after traffic stop and a physical struggle late Sunday night.

The officer pulled over a car at about 10:30 p.m. on North Wildwood Avenue between East Grant Street and East Glen Street in the city of Crandon. After the stop, the officer and a man from the car got in a physical struggle. The officer shot his duty weapon, killing the man.

The officer went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Wisconsin Department of Justice said the officer was the only person who fired a shot. The names of the man and officer have yet to be released.

The state DOJ is investigating the case, as is common with officer-involved deaths. DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation agents arrived in Crandon on Sunday night and continued their work Monday.

LINCOLN COUNTY - The man who died when his ATV hit a bear in Lincoln County lived in Tomahawk.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies tell us 51 year old Kevin Ives died in the accident northwest of Tomahawk Thursday night.

Ives had been headed west on County Road CC, east of Poplar Drive in the town of Wilson.

The ATV rolled when it hit the bear, and then Ives was thrown off.

He was taken to the hospital, but died of his injuries.

This was the third year the Rhinelander event has been held.

RHINELANDER - A car crash took place at Highway 8 and County Road G in Rhinelander Sunday night around 7 p.m.

It appeared that two cars collided.

MADISON - A Wisconsin tribe is set to grow hemp in hopes of extracting oil from the plant that could help treat seizures and other health problems.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the St. Croix Chippewa plan to begin production at the end of the month.

Parents of children who suffer seizures contend cannabidiol oil, a hemp extract, can help ease symptoms.

MADISON - Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos calls three fellow Republicans "terrorists" over how they negotiated the state budget with Governor Scott Walker.

Vos made the comment in an interview aired Sunday. 

Vos was referring to a deal Walker cut with three Republican state senators to veto parts of the budget they objected to in order to win their support for the larger plan.

MADISON - Several proposals targeting Alzheimer's Disease and dementia are being circulated in the Wisconsin Legislature, the latest attempt to improve care both for patients and family members.

The bills are the outgrowth of a task force created in 2015 to address Alzheimer's, which is the sixth leading cause of death in Wisconsin.
