MEDFORD - Many people think of football, basketball, and baseball when they think of high school sports, but in one northcentral Wisconsin community, curling comes to some minds.
The Medford High School curling team is one of the few high school teams in the area.
"Curling is definitely a different kind of sport," says Varsity Curler Douglas Schumacher.
Medford's High School team is one of six in northcentral Wisconsin.
"Wausau West, East, DC Everest, Stevens Point, Marshfield and Medford," Coach Stuart Amundson said.
In Medford, the love for the sport starts early.
"In the middle school have mini courses that they teach," Amundson says.
That early experience is the reason varsity team members joined.
"I had some experiences in middle school with curling. I thought it was interesting so I joined four years ago," Schumacher said.
"I had the same experiences through gym class, we had a program," says Varsity Curler Noah Jalowitz.
Now, it's a love for the sport and teammates that keep the stones moving.
"Once you start getting a flow of everybody, how they all throw and stuff, it just starts to get better and you know what to expect from their throw," says Varsity Curler Tonja Firnstahl.
