RHINELANDER - Exercising before school can increase a student's academic ability in the classroom.
Many kids chose a new way of transportation for National Walk and Bike to School Day.
Fourth grader Dominick Ratliff rides his bike to Central School in Rhinelander most days.
But on Walk and Bike to School Day, he made an extra effort to spin his tires.
"I saw the sign that said National Walk and Bike to School Day so I decided it would be fun to do it," said Ratliff.
Health specialists want kids to get more physical activity.
"Walk and Bike to School Day is about active transportation and getting to school actively. They can build in those minutes before the school day even happens," said community health specialist Kyla Waksmonski.
Some kids did activities other than pedaling a bike. Patrick Zimmerman, an eighth grader at James Williams Middle School, decided to ride his skateboard.
"It's a fun activity and it's a good workout. It's a lot better than riding the bus or getting a ride," said Zimmerman.
Active transportation is important every day. Studies show that kids who walk or bike to school have better concentration during the day.
"I get my energy all out for school. I get my exercise," said Ratliff.
Even a little rain couldn't stop kids in Rhinelander from getting outside and getting a little exercise.
"It was raining but I still decided to skateboard because why not? It's a fun activity," said Zimmerman.
Adding some exercise to the school routine even just one day a week can create a good habit for kids.
"This is a great way to start young, get those habits in our kids, and that will carry them through their adulthood," said Waksmonski.
Ratliff says he'll convince his friends to join him on his ride to school.
"We can get some exercise and we can talk on the way to school," said Ratliff.
