SHAWANO COUNTY - In April, the Unified School District of Antigo school board voted to close Mattoon Elementary.
Some community members weren't happy about that.
Now, the Village of Mattoon and two other people hired a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against the district and the board.
Mattoon is set to close at the end of this school year.
In the complaint, some parents argue that didn't give them enough time to make plans for next year.
Zak Kickhaver is a Mattoon resident who doesn't want the school to close.
"Students and teachers, parents, to get everything arranged for their new school or their new accommodations. We feel that four months basically isn't enough time," Kickhaver says.
The school board met in closed session Tuesday night with a lawyer.
The district said it closed Mattoon because of low enrollment.
The community members who filed the lawsuit, want at least a year to make plans.
"Ultimately we would love it to stay open infinitely. I think at this point, a year is about the best we're going to get, you know, that's just because it gives us enough time to maybe find another place for our school," Kickhaver says.
A court date in Shawano County hasn't been set yet.
