Derbytrack prepares for first UTV and ATV challenge this weekendSubmitted: 08/27/2015
EAGLE RIVER - You may know the derby track in Eagle River for its snowmobiling championships every winter. This weekend it welcomes some different outdoor vehicles.

On Friday, the AMSOIL Eagle River Derbytrack will host its first World Championship UTV & ATV Derby.

Derbytrack workers said it took about 300 truck loads of dirt and sand to get this track ready.

The weekend will be a lot like the snowmobile derby with qualifiers, final rounds and a championship race.

Derbytrack workers say they don't know yet how many riders are participating because the sign-up is still going on.

"We have a world championship snowmobile derby so why not have a world championship ATV, UTV?" said Richard Decker of the Derbytrack. "So that's what we're doing and it's going great so far, we're really excited."

Riders so far are coming from all over the country, including Texas, the east coast and Canada.

There are more than 60 classes of riders. Classes are categories based on the size and make of your ATV or UTV.

After the races stop in the evenings there will be night events like motocross shows.

There's also camping spaces available in the lots north of the track.

Races start at 9 a.m. on Friday and continue through Sunday afternoon.
