MADISON - The state Elections Commission has approved mailing postcards to more than a million unregistered voters urging them to get on the rolls.
Legislators passed a law earlier this year requiring Wisconsin to join a multi-state consortium called the Electronic Registration Information Center, which works to identify eligible voters who haven't registered. ERIC requires member states to reach out before Oct. 1 every two years to eligible voters who may not be registered.
The commission expects to mail between 1 million and 1.5 million postcards in late September, giving recipients enough time to take action before mail registration ends Oct. 19. Voters also can register at the polls on Election Day Nov. 8.
The commission approved the mailing on a unanimous vote Tuesday.
RHINELANDER - Rhinelander City Administrator Kristina Aschenbrenner finds herself out of a job this week. City attorney Carrie Miljevich confirmed the city council voted 6-2 Monday night to remove Aschenbrenner following a closed-door performance review. The vote was effective immediately.
Alderman Mark Pelletier moved to remove Aschenbrenner in open session and Alderman Sherrie Belliveau seconded the motion. Aldermen Tom Gleason and Steve Sauer voted against the decision.
"The city council has determined to move in a new direction," council president George Kirby said via phone Tuesday morning. Kirby stressed the move was not a "firing," but declined an on-camera interview at this time.
Aschenbrenner was hired in August 2015 and started September 8. She beat three other candidates for the job.
MADISON - Wisconsin election officials have approved placing five candidates on the state's presidential ballot besides Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.
The state Elections Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to place the Constitution Party's Darrell Castle, Libertarian Gary Johnson, the Wisconsin Green Party's Jill Stein, Monica Moorehead of the Workers World Party and Rocky Roque De La Fuente of the American Delta Party on the ballot.
