Tomahawk's Alyssa Lampe earns spot on Team USA Submitted: 05/31/2014
MADISON - Eight years ago, Alyssa Lampe made history in Madison. She became the first female to place in the high school state wrestling tournament.

Saturday, the Tomahawk native returned to the capital to try to earn a berth on the U.S. freestyle team.

If she made the team, Lampe would earn a spot in the 2014 World Championships in Uzbekistan this September.

Tomahawk was well represented in the crowd. Hatchets coach Bob Garrou and the Lampe family ready to cheer Alyssa on.

Lampe faced Victoria Anthony in the finals of 48kg or 105.5 pounds.

First match - Period 1 Lampe got the takedown for 2. Then she got her opponents shoulders exposed to the mat for another 2. Alyssa led 8-0 after one, she won the first match 10-6.

In the 2nd match between Lampe and Anthony, Alyssa trailed after the first period. In the second, she was pinned. That evened the match at 1-1. So it would go to a third and deciding match.

Alyssa would come back strong in the third. She led 2-0 after the first and Lampe would win the match by decision 5-0 over Anthony earning her a spot at the World Championships.

Again, Tomahawk's Alyssa Lampe will be representing Team USA at the World Wrestling Championships in September. We'll have much more from Alyssa Sunday and also Wednesday in our Northwoods Spotlight.
