- Right now in Wisconsin, first time drunk drivers can go through the legal process without ever appearing in court.
That could change.
Currently first offense drunk driving is handled much like a speeding ticket.
That means offenders can pay their fines without needing to stand in front of a judge.
A bill being considered in the senate would require a court visit.
People could be arrested if they didn't show up for their court date.
The Assembly passed the bill in November.
A senate panel approved the measure unanimously Thursday.
It will now head to the full Senate for a vote.
