- A Republican senator from the northwoods softens his plan to limit how local governments can regulate sand mines.
Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst first introduced the bill in October.
It would have stopped local governments from creating mining regulations FOR safety and welfare.
The concern was local governments passing their own water and air quality standards.
As well as their own blasting ordinances.
Opponents thought the bill was an attack on local control.
Tiffany introduced a new proposal on Wednesday.
It would protect existing sand mines from any new zoning, health, safety, welfare or license changes that are more restrictive than what they're currently operating under.
Tiffany said he hopes to get a public hearing on the measure next week.
