Wood-fired power plant now producing electricity Submitted: 11/12/2013
ROTHSCHILD - Wood and sawdust will help light up homes in north-central Wisconsin.

A new wood-fired power plant is now producing power at Domtar Corporation's paper mill in Rothschild.

WE Energies says the 268-million dollar renewable energy project went into commercial operation as of Friday.

The biomass plant burns wood, waste wood and sawdust to produce up to 50 megawatts of electricity.

It's also supplying steam for use by the paper mill in Rothschild.

We Energies chairman Gale Klappa says the addition of the biomass plant lets the Milwaukee-based utility produce renewable energy on demand.

Klappa says that is ``simply not available with solar or wind generation.''

Construction of the plant began in June 2011.
