Bill to close off mine site to go before senate Submitted: 11/05/2013
MADISON - The Wisconsin Senate should take up a bill today that would close sections of forest around a possible mine site.

Testing has been underway at the location in Ashland and Iron Counties.

About 35-hundred acres around the site in the Penokee Hills are part of the state's managed forest program.

The program gives landowners a break on their taxes if they keep the land open for public recreation.

Tensions have been high at the site since protesters emerged from the forest in June and began insulting mine workers.

The bill would close the area around mining equipment and roads on the site.

The state DNR could close additional land to protect the public and mine workers.
