Industry defends sand mining bill Submitted: 11/04/2013
MADISON - Some feel a sand mining bill guts local control, but industry leaders think concerns are overblown.

Republican Senator Tom Tiffany's of Hazelhurst introduced the bill to bar local governments from using their police powers to regulate sand mining.

Police owers give governments broad authority to regulate public safety.

That can currently be used to impose requirements on sand mines.

Rich Budinger, director of the Wisconsin Industrial Sand Association, said the bill still allows locals to use their zoning powers to regulate sand mines.

He also says the mines are already subjected to multiple regulations across all levels of government.

Tiffany doesn't expect the Senate to take up the bill before the end of the year.
