Bill to close off mine site clears committee Submitted: 09/05/2013
MADISON - A legislative committee today approved a Republican bill to close thousands of acres around a potential mine site in far northern Wisconsin. The Senate mining committee passed the bill on a 5-2 vote. The measure now goes to the full senate. Republican leaders say the bill could come before the body this month. Senator Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst authored the bill.

It would close about 35-hundred acres around the site to public recreation. Tiffany says the measure is designed to protect mine workers and government regulators from protesters. Gogebic Taconite is looking to dig a 4-mile long iron mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior. The company has hired armed guards after a group of protesters emerged from the woods in June and accosted mine workers. (Copyright 2013 Associated Press - All Rights Reserved)
