Thunderstorms wipe out top-of-conference soccer match Submitted: 08/29/2013
MINOCQUA - Rolling lightning storms across the Northwoods forced Rhinelander High School and Lakeland to postpone their boys soccer matchup in Minocqua Thursday night.

The JV game, in progress prior to the varsity matchup, was suspended midway through the second half due to lightning in the area. Lakeland Athletic Director Don Scharbarth decided to strike the rest of the JV game and the entire varsity game after a look at the radar.

The most likely makeup dates are in early September. Lakeland would prefer a date next Tuesday, if the Hodags are able to move their previously-scheduled matchup with D.C. Everest. The second option appears to be a September 13th date.

Rhinelander had been staring at a second-straight game against a Great Northern Conference contender. The Hodags played to a 0-0 draw at Northland Pines on Tuesday.

"If we're perfectly healthy, it's a great matchup," RHS head coach Dan Millot said of the Lakeland game prior to its postponement.

Whether the Hodags would have been at full strength was questionable. Senior Nick Wright, who missed the Northland Pines game with a foot injury, was a gametime decision.

"We're going to worry about his health first, and the game second," Millot said.

Wright was taped and wearing a brace in warmups.

Unless the game is moved, the Hodags will next take the field Tuesday at home against D.C. Everest.
