Northwoods library hosts worm race Submitted: 07/30/2013
RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander District Library helps kids dig into reading, quite literally. It hosted the annual Worm Race Tuesday. 62 teams of two did everything they could to get their worms to the finish line first. The race wasn't the only fun part of the day. "It was fun to name him," says race winner Caleb Zastrow.

Zastrow named his worm Bob. This was his four-year-old sister Lexie's first time racing a worm. "It was fun playing with my brother, and when it was starting, I loved the part with the race," Lexie Zastrow added. The event is so popular that there's a waiting list for teams to race. That makes library staffers proud. "Having the books and computers are nice but if you do special programming they tend to stick around and take out some books, and we really try to promote reading during the summer when sometimes it lacks," says Rhinelander District Library Associate Director Tom Hurlburt. Kids went home with gift certificates for pizza, some gummy worms, and other prizes. The winning kids even got trophies. Let's hope the winning worms avoid the bait box.
