- A Wisconsin nuclear plant begins the long process of decommissioning. The Kewaunee nuclear power plant may have been disconnected from the power grid, but the process to decommission the facility will take a long time. Kewaunee County economic developers want to know when the 900 acre site will be ready for redevelopment. The plant's owner, Dominion Resources says that won't happen until decommissioning is complete.
Just how long with that take? Six decades.Nuclear fuel rods removed from the reactor will remain in the cooling pool at the plant for about seven years. Then they will be put into a dry cask. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the spent fuel will be removed from the site by the end of the 60-year decommissioning period. (Copyright 2013 Associated Press - All Rights Reserved)
