- The Crandon/Steve Conway Municipal Airport may be small, but it got some big recognition this year. The airport has seen $810,000 worth of improvements since 2008.It was chosen out of six other airports around the state as the most outstanding improvement project."We thought it was very good, because to try to keep up with the times," said airport director Norm Knoll. "As we were going along, we were kind of falling behind on some things we could add to the airport."
The airport now has all-new lighting, an extended, repaved runway, and room for extra hangars.Security fencing now reaches almost all around airport, which helps with Homeland Security compliance. Most of the money for the improvements came from a 12-cent per-gallon aviation fuel tax.
