- World-famous film critic Roger Ebert passed away Thursday. Ebert had been fighting a long battle with thyroid and salivary gland cancers.
Ebert became a household name with his thumbs up, thumbs down style of movie reviewing.
He had been a film critic for the Chicago sun times since 1967 and influenced moviegoers across the nation with his tv show, alongside Gene Siskel.
In 1975, he became the first journalist to win a pulitzer prize for movie criticism.
Just one day prior he wrote in his blog that he was undergoing radiation treatment for a recurrence of cancer.
He had lost part of his lower jaw to cancer in 2006, leaving him unable to eat or speak.
Roger Ebert was 70 years old.
