- You might remember this story from more than a year ago.
A Vilas County Korean War veteran waited 60 years to get his Purple Heart. Private David Masiakowski was hit by a grenade shell. He carried his foxhole partner on his back to safety and was blinded in one eye.
In February 2012, his service was recognized with a purple heart.
But now, David needs someone to carry him.
Newswatch 12 spoke with David's daughter Trisha Scarlotto, who now lives in Kentucky, Tuesday night.
She explained David is in the hospital in Eagle River and has just six months to live.
Her father's one remaining desire is to get to Milwaukee to live out his days closer to family down there. But he needs a pilot to fly him down and has limited resources and time.
Trisha is reaching out to anyone in the Northwoods who would be willing to fly her father from Eagle River to Milwaukee one last time.
If you or someone you know can help, please call Trisha at 763-561-7602.
Trisha says time is of the essence. The family thanks you for your generosity.
