RHINELANDER, EAGLE RIVER
- Playoffs began Thursday night in girls hockey. Everyone is (0-0) going in. One loss and your season is over.
The Rhinelander/Antigo/Three Lakes Co-op kept their season alive. Known as the Northern Edge, they nipped Wisconsin Rapids-Stevens Point team 2-1.
The game was played at Rhinelander Ice Arena, the first time the Northern Edge have ever hosted a playoff game in their seven-year history.
Sarah Peplinski gave the Red Panthers the lead early in the second period. After getting the puck from a nice pass by Molly Kuckkahn, Peplinski scored on a wrist shot.
The Northern Edge answered on a Katie Detert goal later in the second.
Then the Northern Edge collected the winning goal in the third period. Taylor Trachte scored a power play goal with just under six minutes left in regulation.
Northern Edge goalie Sophie Schmidt would make the lead stand.
Meanwhile in boys hockey on Thursday night, Northland Pines played their first game in the regional finals. The Eagles faced Mosinee and won 3-1.
The Eagles travel to Steven Point to face the Panthers on Tuesday.
