DNR Wants Bear Quota Reduced Submitted: 01/21/2013
MADISON - The state DNR wants to scale back the number of bears hunters can kill this year.

DNR staff have asked the Natural Resources Board to reduce the 2013 statewide harvest limit to 4,000

That's a 13 percent decrease from last year.

They also plan to ask the board to reduce the number of permits to just over 8,500, a 5 percent decrease from 2012.

High harvest limits and permit levels since 2009 have contributed to an overall reduction in the state's bear population of 18,500 animals.

Bear hunting is just one of the issues the Natural Resources Board will consider Wednesday in Madison.

Later this spring, the DNR will gather feedback on whether rifles should be used during gun deer season.

The agency also wants to get rid of the rule that bans leaving hunting stands on state land overnight.
