Disposing of Old Medicines Submitted: 01/11/2013
MADISON - A new study says the vast majority of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in Wisconsin are not being disposed of properly.

The study recommends boosting programs that collect unused household meds.

These programs keep more of those drugs out of the environement, and the hands of people who would abuse them.

The study estimates about 118.8 million prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

That's 13.1 million pounds were dispensed and sold in Wisconsin in 2010.

Of those one-third, or 4.4 million pounds, went unused.

Only two percent were collected for safe disposal.

You can find more informatnion about safe perscription drug take-back programs on the DNR's website.

Many local police departments also participate.
