- Even with cold temperatures lately, you should take caution on the ice. A near-disaster outside of Wausau Thursday was a prime example of why.
Two people escaped their sinking SUV. The car cracked through the ice on Pike Lake in Hatley.
Police arrived around 1:30 p.m. to find the two people inside the SUV escaped the sinking vehicle and make it back to shore.
The DNR says the ice was only about 6 inches thick where the vehicle went through.
The lake is about 30 feet deep at that spot.
The SUV is now at the bottom of the lake and the owners will have 30 days to have it removed.
