Hodag Boys Stay Steady in Tomahawk Win Submitted: 12/15/2012
RHINELANDER - Three Hodags scored in double figures, and Rhinelander rolled to a 62-39 boys basketball win Friday night against Tomahawk.

Mitch Reinthaler had 14 points, Brett Mathews put up 13, and Shane White chipped in 11.

"It tells defenses there's not one guy to this team. You've got to stop a lot of players. It shows their unselfishness," said coach Derek Lemmens.

The Hodags were consistent on offense, scoring between 14 and 19 in each quarter.

"I was really pleased with the way everyone played and the shot selection," Lemmens said.

Reinthaler was in one of his first games back after sitting out the early part of the season with injury.

"He didn't do anything fancy. He made the shots. He got some good positioning, and got guys on his back. I don't think you have seen nearly what he can do yet, though," Lemmens said.

The coach said Reinthaler is likely only 60 percent healthy, which means he can only improve in his production.

The Hodags shut down the top offensive threats for Tomahawk, Jared Jarvensivu (eight points) and Jon Nyberg (six points).

"Nyberg and Jarvensivu Brad (Kenote), Colton (Volkmann), and Shane (White), those guys did a great job on D there," said Lemmens.

Still, there's room for improvement on the defensive end.

"I think other guys got options and shots that they should never have gotten. Our defense was okay. I think we definitely could have done a better job," Lemmens said.

Rhinelander improved to 5-1 and 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference. The Hatchets fell to 4-3, 0-3.

The Hodags head to Antigo for their stiffest GNC test to date, facing a team they lost to three times last year.

"They're still so solid with the basketball, they play great defense, and it's never, ever a team that's just going to fall over," Lemmens said.

HodagSports.com will have the play-by-play broadcast with a 7:30pm tip on Tuesday night.
