- When kids get sick, parents suffer emotionally and financially.
Nonprofit organization Spare Key tries to ease that financial burden.
It covers housing payments for families with seriously ill or injured children.
The Minneapolis-based organization is expanding to Wisconsin next year.
Executive director Erich Mische said northern Wisconsin will be the first part of the state to benefit.
Mische said Spare Key will start getting referrals from social workers in January, and start making housing payments in February.
Since 1997, Spare Key has put $1.6 million toward helping families in Minnesota.
It's also expanding to North and South Dakota.
