3rd Graders Christmas Shop with a Cop Submitted: 12/08/2012
RHINELANDER - Third graders in Rhinelander had some unusual shopping buddies today. They checked off their holiday gift lists with the help of local police and fire fighters.

"Each child was given $100 that they could spend… A lot of the kids were buying presents for parents, siblings, and themselves," said Officer Chad Brown with the Rhinelander Police Department.

It's called ‘Shop with a Cop'. For the fourth year Rhinelander Police, firefighters, and even state troopers spent the day with some hardworking, well deserving youngsters. It gives kids a chance to bond with some new buddies, and see the softer side of law enforcement.

"I think they like the fact that they actually get to meet the police officers and fire fighters on a personal level. They get to know us as people, not just as people that respond in emergency type situations," said Brown.

Kids got a special police escort to the local Walmart for their shopping trip. Afterward, they went back to the fire station to wrap presents.

"They have a great time. They're a little hesitant at first, but they open up. At the end, and we're all having a great time like we've been friends forever," said Brown.

Thanks to donations from the community, 19 children got to Shop with a Cop this year, and they're already accepting donations for next year.

If you'd like to donate to Shop with a Cop, drop off or mail a check to the Rhinelander Police department. Make checks payable to the Rhinelander Professional Police Association.
