Trail Planned From Western Upper Michigan into Lower Peninsula Submitted: 11/30/2012
IRONWOOD, MICHIGAN - Michigan's governor wants you to take a hike, all the way from the western U.P. to Detroit.

Governor Rick Snyder says the state will work to create a 599 mile hiking and biking trail stretching from Ironwood at the western tip of the upper peninsula to Belle Isle park in Detroit.

Snyder's proposal would build on existing trails.

He's told the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to work with private and nonprofit partners to make the full route a reality.

The project would need 152 miles of new trails in the Upper Peninsula and 81.5 miles in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Snyder said Michigan could one day be known as the Trail State.

He says the Ironwood-to-Detroit project would create a ``signature'' experience.
