U.P. Athlete Recognized by Sports Illustrated Readers Submitted: 11/29/2012
ISHPEMING, MICHIGAN - A high school football player from Upper Michigan wins Sports Illustrated Magazine's underdog contest.

Eric Dompierre has down's syndrome.

He took on the Michigan High School Athletic Association to change their rules.

The change allowed him to play football his senior year.

Thousands of people voted online for Eric in the contest.

It's the story of how Dompierre and his dad, Dean, changed the Michigan High School Athletic Association's rule barring anyone over 18 from playing sports.

Voters chose between ten inspirational stories and Eric was in the lead the entire time.

Sports Illustrated has given a 25-thousand dollar grant to the athletic program.
