Northcentral Technical College Celebrates Diversity Submitted: 11/15/2012
WAUSAU - At Northcentral Technical College in Wausau last night, different cultures, food, traditions, and languages mixed together at the tenth annual Global Fair.

The celebration is put on by the school and Marshfield Clinic.

It's part of a nationwide, week-long focus on international education.

"I think it's important to show that the world is ever getting smaller, and we have more and more students who study in the United States," said Michelle Lindell, NTC's International Education coordinator. "We appreciate that kind of diversity and bring out the individuals who are here."

Lopa Kabir is an internist at the Marshfield Clinic in Weston.

She moved here ten years ago from Bangladesh.

For Lopa, the Global Fair is about what makes Americans diverse, but also what brings us together, no matter where we're born.

"It is very important for the community to know that the physicians who are providing their care are U.S. citizens, but they might have been born in a different county," she said. "They bring that culture with them when they're born in a different country, but they're all Americans and they share the community, they live in the community. So it's important for students and neighbors to know who are their neighbors."

Sixty-five international students represented 18 different countries at tonight's celebration.
