Local Elementary Students Raise Money for Sandy Victims Submitted: 11/14/2012
MERRILL - Elementary students in Merrill can sleep soundly knowing they did their part to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Second and third graders at Washington Elementary held a bake sale to raise money for victims on the east coast.

The students also learned about hurricanes and taught other classrooms what they learned.

"We learned how hurricanes form. We learned where Hurricane Sandy went," says Laney Zuelsdorff.

"The eye is the calm part of a hurricane. And a hurricane happens when cold air mixes with warm air," says Ben Freyer.

Students also discovered why it's important to help other people even when they're far away.

"Because they don't have much stuff and it gives them another chance to be happy again," says Zuelsdorff.

This afternoon they held a pie in the face contest, where they got to throw a pie at their favorite teachers.

They'll be sending nearly $700 to the Red Cross for Sandy relief efforts.
