Northwoods Co-Sleeping Death Scary Reminder for New Parents Submitted: 11/02/2012
LAC DU FLAMBEAU - New parents should take note: Having your baby sleep in your bed could be deadly. It happens very rarely in the United States; only about 100 times a year.

But in Wisconsin two deaths in October alone happened, including one in the Northwoods.

Infant Cruz Armando Davila Defoe died in Lac du Flambeau last week while sleeping in his parent's bed.

A Doctor at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander says co-sleeping is a part of some cultures. But it puts their children at risk.

"There should'nt be really to say the truth," Dr. Corujo-Incha said. "There should not be a need for that situation. If that infant is that ill or that sick then it probably doesn't belong at home. It belongs in the hospital."

Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police do not believe the parents were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

They also do not believe the baby was rolled over on while sleeping in the bed.
