High School Students Building House for Auction Submitted: 10/29/2012
ANTIGO - Your next house could be built by some Northwoods students.

The Antigo High School Construction class project is in its 25th year. Each year students in the class build a house behind the high school. They spend two hours a day, five days a week on it.

The house is auctioned off at the end of the school year. That's how the program has been able to support itself every year.

"The emphasis isn't on the dollar amount. The dollar amount is one thing aside, and it's not that much to tell you one thing. But the emphasis is on the student work and what they're getting out of the project and hopefully building a path for a career," says Marcus McGuire, the Antigo High School Cabinetry and Construction Teacher

The program is open to juniors and seniors. Some of the students have their sights set on construction careers. But they say there's a lot anybody can take from the project.

"Even if you're not going to go into the field it's definitely good to do this because you actually get hard labor, and it teaches you actual skills. Mr. McGuire doesn't let you slack around, that's for sure," says Senior, Andrew Guenthner.

"Just being able to know how to do stuff by myself; be able to rely on my own self to do things," says Senior, Adam Basler.

Bidding for the finished house starts at $49,000. They're accepting bids through October 31st. Students should be putting the finishing touches on in spring.
