High Schoolers Put Boats in the Water Submitted: 10/26/2012
RHINELANDER - Most boats in the Northwoods are made of aluminum, fiberglass, or wood - but not these ones.

Science teacher Al Votis' students tested out their cardboard-and-duct-tape vessels today in the YMCA's pool.

"We put a lot of time into ours," Junior Taylor Pitlik said. "We had to make sure it would hold our weight, and we didn't want the water coming in the sides, or the sides caving in, so we spent a lot of time making sure the base was secure."

Events included boat racing and endurance, as well as a style competition.

Most boats were pretty good on the water, but some weren't so fortunate.

It's the first year Votis has tried the project.
